Description
Zapata County legend of valuables lost when the Rio Grande was impounded to form Falcon Lake in 1953, flooding Old Zapata and riverside settlements southeast of Laredo.
Historical Notes
Falcon Dam was completed in 1953, impounding the Rio Grande and forcing relocation of Zapata and other riverside communities. Reservoir projects across Texas revived tales of strongboxes and church goods lost beneath new shorelines. TreasureNet contributors report metal-detecting Old Zapata town sites and cemeteries when lake levels drop. The Falcon State Recreation Area preserves access to the reservoir southeast of Laredo. Coordinates approximate mid–Falcon Lake on the Rio Grande in Zapata County.
