Fairfax Court House Mosby Raid Loot

Lost Treasure VA • Fairfax County County
Description
Fairfax Court House legend tying Mosby's infamous 1863 midnight raid to stolen heirlooms and payroll gold later buried on the escape route toward Culpeper.
Historical Notes
Mosby entered Fairfax at 2:00 a.m. without firing a shot, capturing Stoughton and dozens of prisoners. Lincoln quipped he could make brigadier generals but not horses. The courthouse raid is the anchor event for the broader Mosby treasure legend. Fairfax County historic sites document the raid; treasure hunters focus on pine ridges west toward Warrenton. Robert E. Lee praised the exploit; Union occupation forces increased patrols across Mosby's Confederacy.
Status / Verification legend — Legendary or approximate
