Evant Langford Cove Merchant Strongbox — Hamilton County

Lost Treasure TX • Hamilton County County
Description
Evant legend of a merchant strongbox buried at Langford's Cove — the 1850s sawmill-and-store settlement Asa Langford founded before the town became Evant.
Historical Notes
Asa Langford built a sawmill, blacksmith shop, store, and gristmill forming Langford's Cove, one of Hamilton County's earliest trade centers. Robert Carter and other settlers arrived in 1854; James Rice and Henry Standefer opened a store that developed into the rival town of Hamilton. Early Hamilton County merchant-specie folklore often places strongboxes near mill-and-store crossings on the southern prairie. Present-day Evant straddles the Hamilton–Coryell county line on US Highway 281. Coordinates mark downtown Evant in southern Hamilton County.
