Estacado Quaker Colony Specie — Crosby County

Lost Treasure TX • Crosby County County
Description
Crosby County legend of a Quaker-colony specie cache at Estacado — the 1879 Friends settlement northeast of Lubbock where George Singer opened his first South Plains store.
Historical Notes
Paris Cox founded Estacado in 1879 as a Quaker colony on the Llano Estacado. Harvey Underhill and George W. Singer were among the settlers who arrived before Lubbock County was organized in 1891. Singer operated an early store on the Estacado town square. Remote-colony folklore sometimes describes settlers burying cash and trade goods against Comanche raids and prairie fires. Estacado served as Crosby County seat until 1910 when it moved to Crosbyton. Coordinates mark Estacado in northeastern Crosby County on the Lubbock county line.
