Enchanted Rock Spanish Mineral Wealth Legend — Llano County

Lost Treasure TX • Llano County County
Description
Llano County legend of Spanish mineral wealth at Enchanted Rock — when explorers believed the granite dome was a single mass of silver or iron north of Fredericksburg.
Historical Notes
Enchanted Rock rises 385 feet above Sandy Creek near State Highway 965 at the Gillespie–Llano county line, twenty miles north of Fredericksburg. Spanish explorers and early Texans associated the dome with great mineral wealth; some reports claimed platinum content in 1834. Captain John Coffee Hays held off Comanche raiders for three hours atop Enchanted Rock in the fall of 1841, reinforcing Indian legends of haunted treasure country. State park rules prohibit digging; this entry records folklore only. Coordinates mark Enchanted Rock State Natural Area north of Fredericksburg in southern Llano County.
Status / Verification legend — Legendary or approximate
