Enchanted Rock John Coffee Hays 1841 Ranger Standoff Cache — Llano County

Lost Treasure TX • Llano County County
Description
Enchanted Rock legend of Texas Ranger specie cached during Captain John Coffee Hays's 1841 three-hour standoff — when Comanche raiders fled believing the dome was haunted.
Historical Notes
Cut off from his Texas Ranger company on a surveying trip in the fall of 1841, Captain John Coffee Hays took refuge atop Enchanted Rock and singlehandedly held off Comanche raiders for three hours until they withdrew, convinced the dome possessed malevolent spirits. The state commemorated the episode with a plaque near the summit in 1936. Ranger-standoff folklore sometimes places pay chests or surveyors' strongboxes near battle sites along the Gillespie–Llano county line. Related entry: "Enchanted Rock Spanish Mineral Wealth Legend" documents separate Spanish mine traditions at the same dome. Coordinates mark the Enchanted Rock summit area in Enchanted Rock State Natural Area. State park rules prohibit digging; legend only.
