Enchanted Rock Don Jesus Navarro Rosa Rescue Treasure — Llano County

Lost Treasure TX • Llano County County
Description
Enchanted Rock legend of Spanish soldier Don Jesús Navarro's rescue treasure — when he saved the Christian Indian maiden Rosa from a Comanche sacrifice at the granite dome in 1750.
Historical Notes
One of the most enduring romantic Enchanted Rock legends tells of Don Jesús Navarro, who came from Monterrey to San José y San Miguel de Aguayo Mission in San Antonio in 1750, fell in love with Rosa, daughter of Chief Tehuan, and rescued her from Comanches bent on sacrificing her to the spirits of Enchanted Rock just as she was about to be burned. Spanish rescue-and-sacrifice folklore sometimes imagines abandoned altar goods or ransom specie near sacred granite domes. Hill Country retellings hold that the lovers' spirits remain on the highest point of the rock. Coordinates approximate the Enchanted Rock summit in southern Llano County on State Highway 965. No digging in the state natural area.
