Eleventh Texas Cavalry Confederate Payroll — Grayson County

Lost Treasure TX • Grayson County County
Description
Sherman legend of Confederate cavalry payroll cached near the Eleventh Texas Cavalry muster — when William C. Young organized roughly 1,000 Grayson County recruits for Confederate service.
Historical Notes
During the Civil War William C. Young organized a force of 1,000 men from the Sherman area. This group became the Eleventh Texas Cavalry of the Confederate Army. Grayson County voted for secession 901 to 463 in 1861. Whitesboro in western Grayson County was the scene of one of the earliest secessionist rallies in Texas. The Eleventh Texas Cavalry was commissioned to capture federal forts in Indian Territory north of the Red River. Civil War muster folklore imagines quartermaster receipts and payroll strongboxes buried when columns departed or when Reconstruction authorities returned. Coordinates mark Sherman courthouse square area.
