Eldorado Cattle Trail Payroll — Schleicher County

Lost Treasure TX • Schleicher County County
Description
Eldorado southwest of San Angelo — sheep and cattle country legend of unrecovered trail payrolls cached in the Edwards Plateau breaks along the wagon road to Sonora.
Historical Notes
Eldorado is the county seat of Schleicher County, founded as a ranching and sheep center southwest of San Angelo. The town name itself echoes Spanish "the golden" — a coincidence that feeds local treasure banter. West Texas trail lore describes drovers and trail bosses burying emergency cash in the limestone breaks between San Angelo, Eldorado, and Sonora. Schleicher County appears in regional Goodnight-Loving and wool-trade route histories. Coordinates approximate downtown Eldorado. Private ranch land dominates the county.
