El Indio Irrigation Colony Strongbox — Maverick County

Lost Treasure TX • Maverick County County
Description
Southern Maverick County legend of a settler strongbox at the El Indio irrigation colony — when Goldfrank and Frank opened the Indio Ranch for settlement and cotton production in 1905.
Historical Notes
In 1905 the firm of Goldfrank and Frank opened the Indio Ranch for settlement and irrigation south of Eagle Pass, planting alfalfa and cotton. By 1909 eight irrigated farms covered 1,166 acres in the county; the Maverick County Canal system later spurred farming in the Quemado and El Indio districts. Frontier-colony folklore places merchant specie and payroll boxes when irrigation ventures struggled or when isolated farm districts lacked banking. El Indio remains a farming community in southern Maverick County. Coordinates mark the El Indio district south of Eagle Pass. Respect private farmland.
