El Camino Real Contraband Cache — Chireno

Lost Treasure TX • Nacogdoches County County
Description
Nacogdoches County folklore of smuggled gold and trade silver cached along El Camino Real near Chireno — a historic trail town between Nacogdoches and San Antonio.
Historical Notes
Chireno sits on the Old San Antonio Road (El Camino Real) in southeastern Nacogdoches County. The trail made Nacogdoches a contraband hub under Spanish and Mexican rule; filibusters and traders buried valuables when patrols threatened caravans. The same road tradition produced the Bryan petrified-log caravan legend in the Brazos Valley (separate database entry). Chireno's pine hills and creek crossings appear in East Texas smuggler-cache compilations. Coordinates mark Chireno on TX 21 southwest of Nacogdoches.
Status / Verification legend — Legendary or approximate
