Edisto Island Smuggler Cache

Lost Treasure SC • Colleton / Charleston County County
Description
Edisto Island legend of pirate and blockade-runner gold buried in the sea-island marshes south of Charleston — a remote coast long used for contraband landings.
Historical Notes
Edisto Island's undeveloped beaches and tidal creeks served pirates and later Civil War blockade runners evading Charleston patrols. Charleston Destinations and Lowcountry guides recount buried-chest traditions. The island's isolation preserved oral histories distinct from Charleston harbor and Kiawah pirate tales. Storm erosion occasionally exposes colonial-era artifacts. Edisto Beach State Park and Botany Bay Plantation sit in the heart of the island's smuggler-country folklore.
Status / Verification legend — Legendary or approximate
