Ed Long Portneuf Canyon Stage Gold

Lost Treasure ID • Oneida County County
Description
1863 eastern Idaho legend of ex-stage driver Ed Long and a partner stealing nearly $100,000 in Montana gold dust from a Salt Lake–bound coach, burying it near the City of Rocks before Long was killed at Birch Creek.
Historical Notes
Long waylaid a heavily laden stage between Pocatello and McCammon, fled west to the City of Rocks National Reserve country, and buried leather pouches before a Brigham City posse killed him. His wounded partner was taken to Texas without ever revealing the burial spot; decades of searches including Leander Whittaker and "Glovemaker Jim" failed to recover the cache. The tale anchors the City of Rocks treasure district along the Montana-to-Utah gold freight corridor.
