Duval County Pancho Villa Silver Saddlebags — Duval County

Lost Treasure TX • Duval County County
Description
Duval County legend that Francisco (Pancho) Villa buried two saddlebags of silver in the brush country between Freer, San Diego, and the Rio Grande hinterland.
Historical Notes
The Handbook of Texas Duval County article records a legend of more recent vintage: Francisco (Pancho) Villa may have buried two saddlebags of silver in the area. Related Pancho Villa cache tales appear along the border from Starr and Zapata counties to El Paso. Duval County sits on the Nueces–Laguna Madre divide between Corpus Christi and Laredo. Freer became the county's second oil boomtown after the 1928 Norton wildcat, but ranching and outlaw folklore dominated the earlier era when Villa revolutionaries moved through South Texas. Coordinates mark central Duval County between Freer and San Diego.
