Dry Tortugas Pirate Loot — Fort Jefferson

Lost Treasure FL • Monroe County County
Description
Dry Tortugas legend of pirate chests hidden on the keys west of Key West — remote anchorage for buccaneers and wreckers before Fort Jefferson rose on Garden Key.
Historical Notes
The Dry Tortugas sit at the gateway between the Gulf of Mexico and the Straits of Florida. Pirates and wreckers used the isolated keys to divide plunder far from naval patrols. Fort Jefferson, begun 1846, later guarded the anchorage, but 18th- and 19th-century lore predates the fort with buried Lafitte and Caribbean pirate hoards on sand keys. Dry Tortugas National Park now protects Garden Key; unauthorized digging is prohibited, but Keys charter captains still recount Tortugas treasure tales.
