Description
1878 legend of Dr. Joseph Bazee murdered near Junction Community in Beauregard Parish — he allegedly buried his savings in the piney woods before his killer was hanged in Lake Charles without revealing the spot.
Historical Notes
Dr. Joseph Bazee was murdered near Junction Community in June 1878 while passing through Beauregard Parish. He was buried at Cannon Cemetery. Folklore says Bazee hid his money in the woods to thwart thieves; his murderer was captured and hanged in Lake Charles but never disclosed the location. Local genealogist Curtis Jacobs documents helped revive the tale. Coordinates approximate Junction Community / Cannon Cemetery area northeast of DeRidder.
