Donner Party Hidden Money — Shafter

Lost Treasure NV • Elko County County
Description
Elko County legend that Donner Party survivors or related parties hid money in the Shafter area during the disastrous 1846–1847 Sierra crossing — never recovered from the high desert margin.
Historical Notes
The Donner Party tragedy stranded emigrants in the High Sierra while related groups struggled across the Great Basin. Legends of America repeats Elko County lore of money hidden near Shafter during that winter and never found. Historians treat the tale as unverified extension of Donner folklore rather than documented treasure, but it remains in Nevada northern cache compilations.
Status / Verification legend — Legendary or approximate
