Dolchburg Coal Mine Payroll — Maverick County

Lost Treasure TX • Maverick County County
Description
Eagle Pass legend of a coal-mine payroll near Dolchburg — on the Olmos Coal Formation north of town where soldiers mined ore at Fort Duncan and commercial pits operated around the turn of the century.
Historical Notes
Coal in commercial quantities occurs along the Olmos Coal Formation north of Eagle Pass. Soldiers at Fort Duncan mined the ore as early as 1849, presumably for gunpowder production. John Charles Beales noted coal proliferation in his 1834 journal. Mining operations at Dolchburg and Olmos by Dolch and the Olmos Coal, Coke, and Oil Company were among the largest coal producers in Texas around 1900. Mining-camp folklore imagines payroll chests and assay silver cached when pits played out or markets collapsed. Coordinates approximate Dolchburg coal country north of Eagle Pass. Do not enter abandoned mine workings.
