Devils River Money Well Spanish Gold — Val Verde County

Lost Treasure TX • Val Verde County County
Description
Val Verde County legend of the Devil's River money well — a dry stone well on a bluff above the river whose bottom is said to hold Spanish gold coins guarded by rattlesnakes.
Historical Notes
Houston Chronicle columnist Sigman Byrd retold Quico Montano's 1958 map to a dry, mortar-walled well about 150 yards up a bluff from the Devils River, with a companion's grave nearby. Montano claimed enough Spanish gold to make a hundred poor men rich. Byrd noted the site may lie where Amistad Reservoir submerged the lower Devils River after dam construction in the 1960s. The tale remains one of the best-known treasure stories of the Sonora–Del Rio corridor. Coordinates approximate the lower Devils River bluff country in Val Verde County southeast of Sonora. Respect private land and reservoir regulations.
