Desert Steamers Owens Valley

Lost Treasure CA • Inyo County County
Description
Owens Valley legend of "desert steamers" — overloaded pack trains and stage caches of gold dust hidden along the eastern Sierra routes when winter storms or hostile terrain forced burials.
Historical Notes
Legends of America's Desert Steamers tale describes Gold Rush freight carriers struggling across Owens Valley passes with too much weight and too little water. Folklore says bullion and dust were buried beside dry lake beds and sage flats to lighten loads, with owners killed or diverted before return. The story links Inyo County desert commerce between the Mother Lode and Nevada mining camps with classic marked-tree cache variants.
