Description
Maverick County legend of traders' goods cached before the 1877 mutilation at Deadman's Hill — site of the county's last Indian raid eight miles northeast of Eagle Pass.
Historical Notes
The last Indian raid in Maverick County occurred in 1877 at a place eight miles northeast of Eagle Pass where three traders suffered gruesome mutilation. The site was known for many years afterward as Deadman's Hill. Black Seminole Scouts organized at Fort Duncan after the Civil War helped control frontier raiding. Trader-route folklore imagines merchandise, specie, and pack goods buried when parties sighted raiding bands on the brush-country trails between Eagle Pass and San Miguel.
