Historical Notes
Dayton sits in Liberty County between Houston and the Big Thicket, on the east Texas timber line. The Rocker Box Liberty County list describes a mule train of Spanish gold buried near Dayton, separate from the larger Big Thicket jewel hoard legend. Spanish and Mexican pack-train tales are common along the Old San Antonio Road and Trinity River trade routes. Dayton developed as a lumber and rail town after the Civil War.
