Description
Centre County legend that outlaw David Lewis buried the proceeds of his robberies within sight of the Bellefonte jail on his deathbed — a classic Pennsylvania highwayman hoard.
Historical Notes
David Lewis operated as a robber across central Pennsylvania in the early nineteenth century. On his deathbed he reportedly said he buried loot from his crimes within sight of the jail holding him. Searchers have looked in both Centre and Carbon counties because Lewis ranged widely along the ridges.
