Danville National Cemetery Tree Cipher Gold

Lost Treasure VA • Danville County
Description
Danville folklore of Confederate gold clues carved into a beech tree in the National Cemetery — part of local treasure maps tied to the April 1865 last capital.
Historical Notes
Richmond Times-Dispatch profiled Albert Atwell and others who claimed etchings on a cemetery beech tree point toward buried Confederate treasure. Artist-historian Danny Ricketts mapped the fall of the Confederacy in Danville while doubting the bullion tales. Green Hill Cemetery and Oak Hill Plantation appear in parallel Danville legends. Register & Bee archives note metal-detector hits that sustain hobbyist interest. Archeologists discourage unscientific digging that destroys interpretable layers.
Status / Verification legend — Legendary or approximate
