Dalton Gang Loot — Montgomery County

Lost Treasure KS • Montgomery County County
Description
Legend that Bob, Grat, and Emmett Dalton buried $9,000–$20,000 in stolen loot near their Onion Creek campsite west of Coffeyville just before the fatal October 1892 double-bank robbery.
Historical Notes
The Dalton Gang operated across Kansas and Indian Territory between 1890 and 1892, robbing trains and banks after several brothers left U.S. deputy marshal service. Bill Power, Dick Broadwell, and the Daltons camped on the P.L. Davis farm four miles west of Coffeyville on the night of October 4, 1892. Regional compilations state that between $9,000 and $20,000 in loot was buried near the gang's Onion Creek campsite prior to the Coffeyville raid. Some versions place the cache across the border in Nowata County, Oklahoma. On October 5 the outlaws tried to rob the Condon and First National banks simultaneously. Townsmen killed Bob and Grat Dalton, Bill Power, and Dick Broadwell; Emmett survived with twenty bullet wounds. The campsite hoard — if it existed — was never linked to recovered bank money. Coordinates approximate Onion Creek west of Coffeyville.
