Dahlonega Gold Rush Lost Cache

Lost Treasure GA • Lumpkin County County
Description
Lumpkin County legend of outlaw and miner caches lost in the 1829 Georgia gold rush hills around Dahlonega — America's first major gold rush before California.
Historical Notes
Gold was discovered in north Georgia in 1828–1829, triggering the nation's first gold rush and accelerating Cherokee removal. Dahlonega became a boomtown with minting operations and hard-rock mines. TreasureNet and local tradition describe miners and bandits burying coin and nugget hoards in the ridges around Dahlonega rather than risk transport through lawless mountain roads. The Consolidated Gold Mine and Dahlonega Gold Museum preserve mining history amid continuing hobbyist searches for forgotten caches.
