Cumberland Gap Confederate Treasury Tunnel

Lost Treasure TN • Claiborne County County
Description
Cumberland Gap legend of Confederate officials concealing treasury gold in limestone caves and tunnels when Union forces threatened the strategic mountain pass in 1862–1863.
Historical Notes
Cumberland Gap controlled access between the Tennessee Valley and Kentucky. When Union armies pressed the pass, folklore imagines treasury wagons from Knoxville and southwestern Virginia hiding bullion in cave systems. The gap changed hands multiple times during the war. Limestone karst around the Pinnacle and Iron Furnace areas provides plausible hiding geography echoed in other Appalachian treasury tales. Cumberland Gap National Historical Park preserves the pass; treasure stories remain hobbyist lore rather than park interpretation.
Status / Verification legend — Legendary or approximate
