Crockett County San Antonio El Paso Road Payroll — Crockett County

Lost Treasure TX • Crockett County County
Description
Crockett County legend of an army freight or stage payroll buried along the San Antonio–El Paso Military Road mesa country between Ozona and Horsehead Crossing.
Historical Notes
Crockett County lies on the Edwards Plateau breaks where the lower Military Road struck west from the Devils River valley toward the Pecos. Brevet Major Jefferson Van Horn's 1849 wagon train of 275 wagons proved the route viable for military freight. Payroll and strongbox tales cluster at mesa water holes where pack trains and jerk-line wagons camped between Del Rio and Horsehead Crossing. Related entry: "Iraan Pecos River Crossing Outlaw Cache" documents a downstream variant. Coordinates approximate the San Antonio–El Paso road corridor east of Ozona in Crockett County.
Status / Verification legend — Legendary or approximate
