Crabapple St Johns Lutheran Pioneer Strongbox — Gillespie County

Lost Treasure TX • Gillespie County County
Description
Crabapple legend of a pioneer strongbox at the 1897 St. John's Lutheran Church — the German settlement on Crabapple Creek north of Fredericksburg toward Enchanted Rock.
Historical Notes
Crabapple is on Crabapple Creek about 10½ miles north of Fredericksburg in northern Gillespie County. Friedrich Wellgehausen, Jacob Land, James Riley, and other German families settled the area by the mid-1800s; a school operated by 1867 and St. John's Lutheran Church was built in 1897. German-settler strongbox folklore places specie along creek-bottom farms between Fredericksburg and Enchanted Rock on Ranch Road 965. The Crabapple post office operated from 1894 to 1910. Coordinates mark Crabapple on the road from Fredericksburg to Enchanted Rock State Natural Area.
