Cowhouse Creek Ranch Payroll — Coryell County

Lost Treasure TX • Coryell County County
Description
Western Coryell County legend of ranch payroll cached along Cowhouse Creek — one of the two principal streams draining the Grand Prairie plateaus of Coryell County.
Historical Notes
Cowhouse Creek drains the western and southern areas of Coryell County through Grand Prairie grasslands and limestone plateaus. Early settlements in the 1850s included Boyd's Cove (Bee House), Mound, and Turnover. The 1860 census recorded 25,000 cattle and 8,500 hogs in Coryell County; stock raising dominated until railroads arrived in 1882. Ranch payroll folklore often places strongboxes in creek bends and cedar breaks when trail herds and roundups moved through. Coordinates approximate mid–Cowhouse Creek northwest of Gatesville. Related entry: "Oglesby Leon Junction Rail Payroll — Coryell County" documents separate 1882 railroad-era lore in eastern Coryell.
Status / Verification legend — Legendary or approximate
