Cotulla Gunfight Days Payroll Cache — La Salle County

Lost Treasure TX • La Salle County County
Description
Cotulla legend of unrecovered cash from the town's gunfight era — when saloons, cattle shipping, and frontier violence made the county seat a South Texas tough town.
Historical Notes
Cotulla earned a rough reputation in its early years. Railroad conductors were said to warn passengers to ready their guns; three sheriffs and nineteen residents reportedly died in gunfights. By 1892 the town had a hotel, four general stores, three saloons, a meat market, and two grocery stores. Frontier cattle-shipping towns on the IG&N line concentrated weekly payrolls in cash before banks matured. Gunfight-era folklore often places buried strongboxes when saloon keepers, sheriffs, or gamblers died without revealing hiding places. Coordinates mark downtown Cotulla in La Salle County.
