Cotulla Gold Coins Bullion Cache — La Salle County

Lost Treasure TX • La Salle County County
Description
Cotulla legend of a large cache of gold coins and bullion hidden near the La Salle County seat on Interstate 35 between Laredo and San Antonio.
Historical Notes
The Rocker Box La Salle County page lists a large cache of gold coins and bullion supposedly located near Cotulla. Joseph Cotulla founded the town in the early 1880s by donating land to the International-Great Northern Railroad; by 1883 voters made Cotulla the county seat over rival La Salle. Cotulla developed a reputation as a rough frontier town — railroad conductors reportedly called out "Cotulla! Everybody get your guns ready." Three sheriffs and nineteen residents are said to have died in gunfights, a classic setting for lost strongbox and outlaw-cache folklore. Coordinates mark downtown Cotulla at the intersection of Interstate 35 and State Highway 97.
