Conroe Montgomery County Oil Boom Cache

The Conroe oil field discovery in 1931 transformed Montgomery County from lumber country into a petroleum boomtown. Fortunes, gambling, and roughneck culture fed folklore of buried strongboxes and skimmed field profits. North Houston treasure tradition often ties Montgomery County to Confederate variants as well, but the Conroe boom provides a distinct twentieth-century cache narrative along the San Jacinto River and Lake Conroe corridor.
