Confederate Gold — South Carolina-Georgia Border

Lost Treasure SC • Abbeville / Anderson County County
Description
Upstate legend of Confederate treasury wagons zigzagging across the South Carolina–Georgia line in 1865 to evade Union cavalry — with bullion allegedly buried along the escape route.
Historical Notes
Captain William H. Parker escorted the Richmond treasury south after Jefferson Davis fled Virginia. When U.S. cavalry closed in near Charlotte, Parker repeatedly crossed the South Carolina–Georgia border to confuse pursuers. Treasury funds were dispersed to troops at Washington, Georgia; Richmond bank reserves were banked then seized. Folklore holds portions were buried in the Piedmont ridges of Abbeville and Anderson counties. South Carolina Humanities and Civil War roundtables link the border zigzag to generations of upstate treasure-hunting stories.
Status / Verification legend — Legendary or approximate
