Confederate Gold — Danville Last Capital

Lost Treasure VA • Danville / Pittsylvania County County
Description
Danville legend of Confederate treasury specie hidden when Jefferson Davis made the city the last capital in April 1865 — before the gold train moved south into North Carolina.
Historical Notes
When Richmond evacuated on April 3, 1865, Confederate officials and treasury wagons reached Danville — the final capital east of the Mississippi. Some reports hold portions were concealed locally rather than continuing to Greensboro. Richmond Times-Dispatch and Virginia Places describe dreams of casks still under Danville streets. Historians caution that official records of bullion quantities are incomplete. Danville's tobacco warehouses and rail junction made it a natural pause point for the fleeing government.
Status / Verification legend — Legendary or approximate
