Confederate Gold — Blue Ridge Escape Route

Lost Treasure NC • Buncombe / Henderson County County
Description
Western North Carolina legend that Confederate treasury wagons fleeing Danville and Greensboro buried gold in Blue Ridge caves and cabins along Jefferson Davis's 1865 retreat.
Historical Notes
As Richmond fell, Confederate gold trains moved south through North Carolina toward Georgia. Blue Ridge Tales recounts folklore that wagons were diverted west into mountain hollows for safekeeping. Stories persist of coins in caves, old wells, and abandoned cabins from Hendersonville to the Smokies. TreasureNet and Civil War forums document hobbyist searches along the escape corridor. The legend links Danville's vanished treasury to Appalachian hiding spots in both Virginia and North Carolina.
