Confederate Gold — Archer to Waldo Railroad

Lost Treasure FL • Alachua County County
Description
North Florida legend of Confederate gold sovereigns buried along David Levy Yulee's railroad between Archer and Waldo in May 1865 — when treasury escorts divided bullion before surrendering to Union forces.
Historical Notes
In May 1865 a small Confederate wagon train reached Senator David Levy Yulee's Cottonwood plantation near Archer with chests of gold and Jefferson Davis records. Ten soldiers each received 400 gold sovereigns plus travel money before dispersing toward Waldo and Baldwin. Florida Traveler and Civil War historians note the men surrendered without declaring gold, fueling belief they buried coins along Yulee's Fernandina-to-Cedar Key rail corridor to avoid search. Union cavalry seized Davis trunks at Waldo but found no bullion in the wagons. Metal-detecting folklore persists along the old rail bed between Archer and Waldo in Alachua County.
