Comstock Devils River Crossing Strongbox — Val Verde County

Lost Treasure TX • Val Verde County County
Description
Val Verde County legend of a stage or military strongbox buried near Comstock at a historic Devils River crossing on the San Antonio–El Paso lower road southeast of Sonora.
Historical Notes
Comstock sits on Texas Highway 163 where the modern road follows the Whiting-Smith and Van Horn expedition route up the sinuous Devils River valley. The lower road required eighteen river crossings before reaching Horsehead Crossing on the Pecos. Camp Blake protected the first wagon crossing on the Devils River from April to October 1854. Strongbox folklore often places army pay chests near protected crossings when garrisons withdrew. Coordinates mark Comstock in Val Verde County on the Devils River corridor below Sonora.
