Comfort Union Loyalist Strongbox — Kendall County

Lost Treasure TX • Kendall County County
Description
Comfort legend of a Union loyalist strongbox buried near the German Hill Country town — when pro-Union settlers faced Confederate persecution before the 1862 Nueces Fight.
Historical Notes
Comfort was founded in 1854 by German Freethinkers and abolitionists who largely opposed secession. In August 1862 Confederate forces attacked a group of Unionists marching toward Mexico at the Nueces River, killing dozens in the Battle of the Nueces; the Treue der Union monument in Comfort honors the dead. Hill Country folklore sometimes places emergency specie buried when pro-Union Germans hid valuables before fleeing toward Mexico. Comfort lies on US Highway 87 between Fredericksburg and Boerne in Kendall County. Coordinates mark downtown Comfort in Kendall County southeast of Fredericksburg.
