Comanche Creek — Mason County Placer Gold

Gold Mining Site TX • Mason County County
Description
Comanche Creek tributary of the Llano River in central Mason County. Mill-settlement creek where upland gravels may carry fine placer gold alongside Llano Uplift heavy minerals.
Historical Notes
Comanche Creek rises in central Mason County and flows southeast to the Llano River. James Ranck and John Lemburg built a mill and gin on Comanche Creek before 1870; rural schools and churches clustered near such mill settlements in early Mason County. The creek drains Llano Uplift granite and limestone terrain between Mason and Katemcy. Regional gold-panning traditions on the Llano River system extend into tributary gravels where fine gold erodes from Precambrian country rock. Coordinates approximate the central Comanche Creek valley in Mason County. Private ranch land — obtain permission before prospecting.
