Cochise Train Robbery Gold

Lost Treasure AZ • Cochise County County
Description
1899 legend: lawmen-turned-outlaws Burt Alvord and Billy Stiles robbed a Southern Pacific express of $60,000 in gold near Cochise and buried it near a cabin half a mile outside town before Alvord was jailed and Stiles killed.
Historical Notes
In September 1899 Alvord and Stiles held up a Southern Pacific train near Cochise, taking gold coins and bullion. They cached the loot near their hideout cabin on the old trail between Willcox and Cochise. Before they could recover it, Alvord went to prison and Stiles died. Wells Fargo agents searched thoroughly but never found the hoard. Cochise is a historic railroad town in Sulphur Springs Valley.
