Clovis Santa Fe Railroad Payroll — Curry County

Lost Treasure NM • Curry County County
Description
Clovis legend of an unrecovered Santa Fe Railway payroll from the era when the High Plains division point became the cattle-shipping capital of eastern New Mexico.
Historical Notes
Clovis was founded in 1906 as a Santa Fe Railway division point on the Belen Cutoff across the eastern Llano Estacado. The town quickly became a major cattle-shipping and railroad crew center between Amarillo and Belen. Rail-payroll treasure folklore mirrors Tucumcari, Texico, and Portales variants along the same corridor. Clovis later gained fame as the 1950s rock-and-roll recording town, but its origin is pure railroad commerce. Coordinates mark downtown Clovis in Curry County on the Texas–New Mexico border.
Status / Verification legend — Legendary or approximate
