Clovis Cattle Shipping Strongbox — Curry County

Lost Treasure NM • Curry County County
Description
Curry County legend of a cattle-shipping strongbox buried near the Clovis stockyards — when the Santa Fe made the town the eastern New Mexico hub for trail and ranch herds.
Historical Notes
Before oil transformed southeastern New Mexico, Clovis and Texico anchored the cattle-shipping trade on the High Plains. Ranchers converted open-range herds to rail consignments at Santa Fe stockyards, moving substantial cash through the county seat. Cattle-baron and trail-boss specie caches appear throughout eastern New Mexico guidebooks alongside railroad payroll legends. Curry County organized in 1909 with Clovis as county seat. Coordinates approximate the historic rail corridor and stockyard district in Clovis.
Status / Verification legend — Legendary or approximate
