Description
Clayton legend of outlaw loot buried near the Union County seat — a northeastern New Mexico cattle and railroad town on the Santa Fe Trail approach to the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles.
Historical Notes
Clayton became the Union County seat in 1894 and developed as a railroad and ranching center on the northeastern High Plains. The town sits on historic freight routes connecting the Santa Fe Trail country to Amarillo, Dalhart, and the Clovis line. Outlaw cache tales appear throughout northeastern New Mexico where trail traffic, cattle barons, and saloon commerce overlapped.
