Clay County Jesse James Strongbox — Corning

Lost Treasure AR • Clay County County
Description
Northeast Arkansas lore of a Jesse James strongbox buried near Corning in Clay County — loot from a Missouri bank job hidden in Crowley's Ridge oak woods before a posse closed in.
Historical Notes
Crowley's Ridge provides a distinct geographic setting from Ozark James stories, with Clay County traditions claiming the outlaw traded along the ridge roads between Arkansas and Missouri. Popular Mechanics–era treasure articles and forum lore describe a buried strongbox marked by a lone oak, never recovered after James allegedly returned to Missouri. Professional historians remain skeptical of James ties to Clay County, but the strongbox entry persists in Arkansas northeast treasure lists.
