Civil War Hidden Wealth — Southwest Louisiana

Lost Treasure LA • Calcasieu / Cameron Parish County
Description
Widespread legend that Louisiana families buried gold, silver, and jewels during the Civil War to hide them from Union looting — much never reclaimed in southwest bayou country.
Historical Notes
As Federal troops advanced into Louisiana, families reportedly buried valuables to prevent Yankee theft and arson. Some caches were never recovered after owners died or fled. George O. Maher's early metal-detector searches near Lake Charles reportedly found an 1862 letter with $350 in a jug (1920) and a $10,000 Civil War chest of gold and jewelry (1924), per Lake Charles American Press accounts cited in regional histories. Kiss Country 93.7 and local historians note Civil War treasure mysteries remain part of northwest and southwest Louisiana folklore.
