Cimarron Santa Fe Trail Gold

Lost Treasure NM • Colfax County County
Description
Legend of 25 bags of gold coins (~$150,000) buried between Ute Park and Cimarron after Apache attack on Santa Fe Trail freighters; marker described as three large rocks, one "half as large as a house."
Historical Notes
Three days out from Independence, Missouri on the Santa Fe Trail, a freight party carrying 25 bags of gold coins was attacked by Apaches. Survivors allegedly buried the cache between Ute Park and Cimarron before all but one died of wounds. The dying man's description of three large rocks has fueled searches in Colfax County for over a century. Cimarron was a wild frontier town on the Santa Fe Trail near Philmont Scout Ranch country.
