Christopher Bechtler Lost Gold — Rocky Broad River

Lost Treasure NC • Rutherford County County
Description
Hickory Nut Gorge legend of mintmaster Christopher Bechtler's wrecked buggy and vanished body along the Rocky Broad River turnpike — carrying a large sum of gold never recovered.
Historical Notes
Western North Carolina ghost-story collections tie the famed Bechtler private mint family to a carriage accident on the gorge turnpike. The smashed buggy was found on river rocks; neither Bechtler's body nor his gold resurfaced. Folklore reports phantom buggy sounds on moonlit nights along the Rocky Broad. The tale overlaps Round Top Mountain treasure traditions in the same gorge. Barnett & Russell's "Mountain Ghost Stories" and local touring guides preserve the Bechtler disappearance.
Status / Verification legend — Legendary or approximate
