Chowan River Blackbeard Hideout Gold

Lost Treasure NC • Bertie County County
Description
Northeastern North Carolina legend of Blackbeard caching loot up the Chowan River at Holiday Island — a remote retreat named in pirate-era tradition.
Historical Notes
Legends of America lists Holiday Island on the Chowan River among Blackbeard's hideouts when evading British patrols. The broad Albemarle Sound river system offered cover similar to Ocracoke and Bath. Bertie County's swampy shores and colonial plantations provided landing spots for dividing plunder from Carolina and Virginia prizes. The Chowan legend complements authenticated Blackbeard sites at Bath, Beaufort Inlet, and Ocracoke.
Status / Verification legend — Legendary or approximate
