Chouteau's Island Mystery — Kearny County

Lost Treasure KS • Kearny County County
Description
Santa Fe Trail legend of $24,000 in silver coins buried on Chouteau's Island in the Arkansas River in 1828 — five miles southwest of Lakin before river erosion swallowed the landmark.
Historical Notes
Chouteau's Island sat in the Arkansas River along the Santa Fe Trail southwest of Lakin in present Kearny County. Folklore dates a cache of $24,000 in silver to 1828, when trail traffic was heavy between Missouri and New Mexico. The island was a well-known Arkansas River landmark named for fur-trade families active on the plains. Decades of spring floods and channel shifts eroded the island; treasure guides now place the hoard beneath former riverbed soils in Kearny County. Kearny County Museum and Legends of Kansas preserve Chouteau Island history. No authenticated recovery has been reported. Coordinates mark the historic island vicinity southwest of Lakin.
